Situé à quarante kilomètres au sud de Paksé, la ville de Champassak s’étend sur une plaine délimitée par le Mékong à l’Est et par des collines sur son flanc Ouest avec comme point culminant le Phou Khao où a été édifié le Wat Phou, temple Khmer du Xe siècle en l’honneur de la déesse Shiva.

Part de l’empire Khmer, Champassak est annexé par le royaume de Lan Xang - littéralement le royaume du million d’éléphant, gouverné par le roi Fa Ngum, en 1354. Elle est aujourd’hui la province la plus australe du Laos, frontalière du Cambodge et de la Thaïlande.

Located at forty kilometres from Pakse, Champassak town is settled in the plain delimited by the Mekong in the East and by hills in the West side with the highest peak of Phou Khao where has been built during the tenth century the Wat Pou, Khmer temple built in honor of the goddess Shiva.

Part of the Khmer Empire, Champassak is annexed by the Lan Xang kingdom –literally the land of a million elephants, governed at this time by Fa Ngum King, in 1354. Today it is the most southern province of Laos bordering Cambodia and Thailand.
